Magic Eden Guide: What it is and How to Buy and Sell NFTs
Magic Eden is one of the most popular NFT marketplaces for users looking to buy, sell, or discover NFTs across its large range of Solana NFT collections.
In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about Magic Eden, including how to buy and list on the marketplace, different purchasing methods such as Packs and Wonder Pick, and how it compares to OpenSea.
What is Magic Eden?
Magic Eden is a Solana marketplace for buying, selling, and minting NFTs. It launched in 2021, during the NFT boom, and quickly became one of the most well-known marketplaces in the Solana ecosystem.
Users can browse collections and individual NFTs, compare listings, and make offers. Magic Eden also has partnerships that introduce tokenized collectibles, such as its partnership with Collector Crypt, which lets users purchase tokenized cards and other collectibles.
Collections available
Magic Eden has a number of popular collections, including:
Mad Lads
Tomorrowland: A Letter from the Universe
SMB Gen 2
Claynosaurz
Collector Crypt Tokenized Pokémon Cards
Magic Eden’s Creator Hub also provides the option for users to create NFT collections.
How does Magic Eden work?
On Magic Eden you can browse available collections and review metrics such as floor price, sales history, traits, and recent activity to find the right NFT for you. You can also use Magic Eden’s aggregation feature to compare listings and prices across multiple marketplaces.
Once you’ve decided which NFT you’d like to buy, you can connect a compatible wallet. Magic Eden supports Solana-compatible wallets, including Phantom and Solflare.
You can purchase an NFT at its listed price or make an offer:
Trait offers: Offers on NFTs with specific traits, such as ‘helmets’.
Item-level offers: Offers on specific NFT in a collection.
Collection offers: Offers on any NFT in an entire collection.
Once the transaction is confirmed, the NFT is transferred to your wallet.
What is the $ME token?
$ME is Magic Eden’s native token used within the ecosystem for staking, rewards, and governance, with a maximum supply of 1 billion $ME. One of the biggest draws of the token is staking $ME, which allows users to participate in Magic Eden Rewards. Staking power determines both the share of the monthly rewards as well as voting power in onchain governance proposals.
Magic Eden features
Magic Eden has several features that offer new NFT distribution methods and enhance creator and developer experiences.
Magic Eden Launchpad
Magic Eden’s Launchpad provides creators with tools and infrastructure to launch and mint NFT collections on the Solana blockchain. Magic Eden vets Launchpad projects using factors such as community engagement and social media following, art quality, a transparent team, and utility. These specifications ensure that projects are high quality and meet safety standards, although you should still conduct your own research before purchasing.
uMagic Eden Packs
Magic Eden Packs is a marketplace feature that lets you purchase and open a pack containing randomized NFTs and tokenized collectibles. A range of NFTs are included, with notable collections such as SolPunks, Bored Ape Solana Club, Transdimensional Fox Federation. Magic Eden’s partnership with Collector Crypt also means that some Packs contain tokenized Pokémon cards. When you open a pack, you can either keep the NFT or collectible or take a payout for 90% of the floor price for NFT packs and 85- 93% for Pokémon packs.
Magic Eden Wonder Pick
Magic Eden Wonder Pick is a new marketplace feature that is still in beta. It’s a randomized card-drawing minigame: each Wonder Pick has four common cards and one rare card. You pick one card and receive a random NFT or accept the payout. Wonder Pick adds a gamified element to NFT distribution.
Magic Eden API
The Magic Eden API allows developers to integrate Magic Eden data and marketplace functionality into their applications. The API documentation covers endpoints, authentication, API keys, and rate limits. Magic Eden’s API offerings are changing, so you should always check the current documentation.

Is Magic Eden legit?
Magic Eden is an established NFT marketplace founded in 2021 and is headquartered in San Francisco. It has received institutional backing from investors such as Coinbase Ventures, Paradigm, and Greylock.
However, being a legitimate marketplace does not mean it is invulnerable—there are still smart contract risks and phishing attempts. In September 2026, a vulnerability in Limit Break’s Payment Processor V2 was exploited through legacy wallet approvals when Magic Eden still had its EMV marketplace. While a white-hat hacker moved 23,000 exposed NFTs into custody, the attackers stole wETH and individual blue-chip NFTs. This did not affect live Magic Eden listings, but users were guided to go into their wallet approvals and revoke permission for the Payment Processor.
When using a new platform, it’s always best to DYOR and take standard security measures, such as verifying collection and seller information through official project channels, using a hardware wallet where appropriate, reviewing every transaction before approving it, and regularly cancelling dormant or unused smart contract permissions. Magic Eden also has tools in place to report suspicious projects and listings.
Magic Eden vs OpenSea
| Features | Magic Eden | OpenSea |
|---|---|---|
| Supported blockchain | Solana | Multi-chain (25 including Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon) |
| Marketplace fee | 2% transaction fee | 1% fee for NFT sales |
| Listing fee | 0% listing fee | 0% listing fee |
| Creator royalties | Optional for buyer or enforced, depending on collection | Optional for buyer or enforced, depending on collection |
| Creator tools | Creator hub and Launchpad | OpenSea Studio |
| Aggregation tool | Yes | Yes |
Both Magic Eden and OpenSea are solid marketplace options, with access to Solana collections and tools to help creators and developers. If you’re looking for NFTs across multiple blockchains, OpenSea is the only one of the two that offers multi-chain access. However, if you’re buying based on collections or specific features, you can always switch between marketplaces and use the platform’s aggregators to find the cheapest listings for the NFT you’d like.
How transactions on Magic Eden are taxed
The IRS treats NFTs as crypto assets, so they follow the same tax rules as crypto. They may treat certain NFTs as collectibles if they meet the criteria.
If you buy an NFT with crypto, sell it, or trade it, you will be subject to Capital Gains Tax. If you’re a creator selling NFTs, you may owe Income Tax.
The IRS can treat NFTs that represent physical collectibles, like tokenized Pokémon cards, to a maximum long-term capital gains rate of 28% if held for over a year (ordinary tax rates if held for one year or less).
There is currently no official guidance on how tax offices will treat gacha-style openings like Packs.
With Koinly, you can import your wallet’s transaction history to manage all your NFTs across different wallets, calculate your crypto tax, and generate tax reports.
